Igbo Conjunction (Njikọ)



There are few conjunctions in Igbo language. They are:

ganye ma - unless
ganye na - until
ka - as/that/when/while/like
kama - instead of/rather than
ka ọ bụ - or
ka o si na di - yet/notwithstanding/nevertheless
ma - and/but
maka - because
ma...ma - both/whether
kwa...kwa - both/every
ka...ka - both
mana - but
maọbụ - either/or
na - and/that
tupu - before
tutuu - before/until

Examples
1. Mary na John bịara n'ụlọ m - Mary and John came to my house
2. Mary na John bịara, ma ha ahụghị m - Mary and John came, but they didn't see me
3. M ga-ebiri ego, kama m ga-anwụ n'agụụ - I will borrow money, rather than die of hunger
4. Ọ sị ka anyị lawa - She said that we should go home
5. Kpee ekpere tupu i riwe nri - Pray before eating
6. A gwara ya rie nri, mana ọ jụrụ - He was told to eat, but he refused
7. Nna ya chụpụrụ ya maka na o zuru ohi - His dad evicted him because he stole
